  7.     Right-wing assassins in South Africa have found a brutal,
  8. high-tech way to punish their enemies: send them a
  9. booby-trapped tape player. On Feb. 15, such a Walkman-type
  10. device took the life of Bheki Mlangeni, a human-rights lawyer.
  11. The real target of the deadly package was Dirk Coetzee, a
  12. former policeman who now supports the African National Congress
  13. and lives in exile in Zambia. Coetzee testified last summer
  14. that former colleagues on the South African police force were
  15. behind the hit-squad deaths of several A.N.C. activists. The
  16. parcel bomb was sent to Coetzee in Lusaka. But when he refused
  17. to pay the duty on the package, it was sent to Mlangeni's
  18. Johannesburg law firm, falsely listed as the return address.
  19. Intrigued by a tape marked EVIDENCE OF HIT SQUADS, the lawyer
  20. took the tape player home and put on the headset that had been
  21. thoughtfully included. A few seconds later its right earphone
  22. exploded, apparently triggered by a sound signal.
